New releases
CHUMBA
Kipla
With the title track, Kipla,
already hitting No.1 on Kass FM charts in the first month of its release,
this promises to be the most anticipated CD of the year. This, debut solo album by Maroon Commandos
singer Dorice Jepchumba aka Tash is an entertaining
and didactic afrosusion that speakers of Kalenjin, Kiswahili, English,
French, Lingala, Luhya, Taita, Kirundi and Pokomo are bound to find
refreshing.
QUEEN MASHIE
Kare Kare
In a time when Zimbabwe is at
its most depressed period, Sandra Mashiringo’s CD is a trailblazing
and uplifting breathe of fresh air in the tradition set by her internationally
acclaimed predecessors and compatriots Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi,
Andy Brown and Chiwoniso. Her debut solo album has a distinctly Zimbabwean
(Chimurenga) feel fused with East African benga that defines Queen Mashie’s
linguistic and musical journey.
HABEL KIFOTO & MAROON COMMANDOS

This compilation features Habel
Kifoto’s greatest compositions recorded over a span of 20 years that

They include the uncommon Sighenyi
Sheshe, his first composition recorded in 1969; Charonyi
ni wasi, undoubtedly the band’s greatest hit recorded in 1978
and such familiar anthems as Uvivu mbaya, Christina
and Riziki, that are widely acclaimed for their musicianship
and lyrical content.

HELLON
Bizkuti
Hellon comes alive in this rousing
performance of Bizkuti that proves that jazz is dance. It just depends
on your style. Featuring Valerie Kimani and Aaron Krucial Rimbui, this
extremely hypnotizing afrofusion is a buffet of different dance styles
that confirms Hellon to the accolade of East Africa’s top recording
and performing jazz artiste. If you missed the launch, here is your
keep sakes.
MAROON COMMANDOS
Kenya Unite
When Kenya was
rocked by post-election chaos, the armed forces did not respond with
guns. It was an opportunity for The Maroon Commandos to preach peace
with an album extolling Kenyans to unite. Appropriately titled Kenya
Unite, this 8-song album is a tribute to the mediators, political leaders
and a reminder to Kenyans to uphold peace that made their country the
haven of peace in the region.
TITINA
Affaire a suivre
You may have known him as the master drummer of Koffi Olomide’s
Quartier Latin band but as Titina Al Capone demonstrates on this debut
solo album, he is a dynamite in his own class. He joins he ranks of
fellow former Quartier Latin band members who have since left,
including Fally Ipupa, Ferre Gola to unleash a classy self-arranged
12-track album that announces his career switch to a vocalist and
drummer. He features his contemporaries Mirage, Mabiala, Cele Zino,
Alpatchino, Celeo, Ferre Gola among others.
